How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

1. Engine Speed Sensor
Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit challenging since there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite ohms.
4. ECU

You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins.
